Orthotics are custom shoe inserts recommended by podiatrists to help correct abnormal walking patterns. By adjusting the angle at which your foot makes contact with the ground, they make it easier to walk, run, and stand.
These inserts come in various shapes, sizes, and materials. Rigid orthotics, in particular, are made from hard materials like plastic or carbon fiber and are typically used in walking or dress shoes.

Orthotics generally serve three main purposes:
- Change foot function
- Protect the feet
- Control foot movement
Rigid orthotics are considered functional orthotics, meaning they are specifically designed to control foot function and support abnormal foot mechanics.
How Rigid Orthotics Work
Rigid orthotics are crafted using a plastic mold of the feet. The final product is made from a tough, hard plastic material and typically extends from the heel to the ball of the foot, or in some cases, all the way to the toes. These orthotics are most effective when worn in close-toed shoes with a heel no higher than two inches. They are durable, long-lasting, and will not stretch or lose their shape over time.
Rigid orthotics help control movement in the two major joints of the feet located below the ankle. They can:
- Absorb some of the shock from walking or running
- Correct leg length discrepancies
- Improve abnormal foot function
- Alleviate or eliminate aches and pains in the legs, thighs, and lower back
- Reduce overpronation
To determine if rigid orthotics are right for you, it’s best to consult with your doctor. They can evaluate your specific needs and recommend the appropriate solution.
