Heel fissures, or cracks in the skin on your heels, can be uncomfortable and cause self-consciousness. They often develop when calluses are already present on the outer edge of the heel. This skin is typically dry and hard, making it more susceptible to cracking.

If left untreated, heel fissures can deepen, bleed, or become infected, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Causes of Heel Fissures

The most common cause of heel fissures is xerosis (dry skin). They can also form when continuous pressure is applied to the heels, often due to prolonged standing or walking. Wearing shoes with open backs may also contribute to heel fissures because the lack of heel support allows the fat to expand, increasing pressure on the heel and causing the skin to crack.

You may be at higher risk for heel fissures if you:

  • Are overweight
  • Frequently wear shoes with open backs
  • Have a health condition that causes dry skin, such as diabetes or an underactive thyroid
  • Have inactive sweat glands
  • Spend long periods on your feet
  • Suffer from psoriasis or eczema

Heel Fissures Symptoms

Heel fissures typically affect both feet but may occur on just one. Common symptoms include:

  • Hard, dry, cracking skin on the heels
  • Cracks that may appear on one side or around the entire outer edge of the heel
  • Pain, especially when weight is placed on the heel
  • Bleeding, particularly if the cracks are deep

Treatment of Heel Fissures

Since heel fissures are often caused by dry skin, keeping the skin moisturized is essential. A pumice stone can help remove dry, flaky skin, and lotion should be applied to keep the remaining skin soft and healthy. It’s best to apply lotion in the morning and again before bedtime.

Wearing comfortable shoes that provide support for your heels is important. Avoid shoes with open backs, as the lack of support increases pressure on the heel and can cause the skin to crack, especially if it’s already dry.

If the cracks are severe, bleed, or if an infection develops, it’s important to seek medical treatment.
