How Ultrasound Works
Ultrasound imaging operates using high-frequency sound waves that bounce off structures within the body. A computer then translates these echoes into real-time images.
The typical procedure includes:
- Applying a water-based gel to the affected area
- Gently pressing and moving a transducer over the skin to capture detailed images
- Reviewing the images for signs of injury or abnormality
Most ultrasound exams are completed in 30 to 60 minutes and are completely non-invasive.
